Ball point needles were made to be used with KNITS, not wovens. You will find that you are punching through the threads probably damaging the fabric. You'd find that the fabric will wear away faster at the seam because of this.
Well, this is what I thought, too. Steve Ashton ("The Wizard of BC") of Freedom Kilts, the undisputed master of the casual kilt, was the one who suggested big ball points to me. I've gotten good results. Steve is a retired engineer, and his kilts are marvels to behold, not just because they look good but because every aspect of construction is thought out thoroughly, and tested extensively. He is not one to follow "conventional wisdom" without verifying that it is indeed correct. If he says that the big ball points are the best, that's good enough me.
