Can you give me some kilt facts?
Hello ladies and gentlemen,
I am asked to do a presentation for a primary school on kilts.
During the presentation, I would like to throw in some interesting kilt facts, that few people know about.
Please post any facts here, in this thread!
Thank you in advance!
Daniël Craanen

They're pleated in the back, first record of a kilt was in 1594, Highlander's choice of garb, they're awesome, they can make a man out of you, free heat and air conditioning, they're awesome, freedom!, they're awesome and extremely masculine!
you can also look at albanach.org, which is run by a fellow xmarker, Matt Newsome. That site has some interesting facts.

The earliest Celts introduced cloth with checked and striped patterns to the land that would become Scotland as early as the 5th century.
On another front, NASA along with the American Psychological Association and the National Institute on Health (1997) revealed that men wearing kilts walk with 72% more swagger than their bifurcated counterparts, regardless of their nation of origin. You can't argue with it -- it's science.
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!

All well and good, but don't go searching for any ancient pedigree for kilts or tartans in this sentence.

Kids are generally impressed with the fact that if you un-stitched the kilt it would be longer than the room is wide. The are also interested to know that people as diverse as the King of England and Darth Vader (Ewen MacGregor) wore kilts, as did a whole host of other famous people. The are also interested in the fact that kilts can be associated with names (bring along a copy of Bain's Book of Tartans to pass around). If you can, pull some pictures of George VI, Ewen MacGregor, Laurel and Hardy, and some Scots participating in athletics, as well as a pipe band or two, to use as illustrations. (I think I've seen a photo of the late Prince Barnhard of the Netherlands in a kilt-- you might want to see if you can find it via Google.)
In my experience kids ask why the kilt is worn, why I'm wearing one, and then want to know if everyone in Scotland wears a kilt today. Some ask if it is comfortable, and only very rarely will they ask if anything is worn under it (standard answer in school is always "yes, you wear underwear").
Hope that helps, and good luck with your presentation!
