If you live in a very culturally conservative area, this is unfortunately what you deal with. As comfortable as I am in my kilts where I live, I would not wear them back in my very small, conservative hometown. Small, conservative Southern towns are generally not receptive to anything other than jeans, t-shirts, camouflage trucker hats, and NASCAR. I realize I am generalizing, but I grew up around it my whole life until I moved away for college. If you have any sense of clothing or proper men's attire, people generally assume you 'play for the other team' in little backwoods towns around here. The irony is that when it comes to kilts and traditional attire, the Scot/Irish and English were the ones who settled in the Appalachian mountains, and the traditions (including kilt wearing) ARE widely celebrated in many areas around here, as my fellow North Carolinians can attest to. Thank God I now live in Asheville, where people are for the most part educated about heritage and applaud the celebration of it.

Thanks for the advice! I really like where I live, but sometimes they are not as accepting as they should be. I just hear all these stories from you guys about how they get compliments about their kilts, and wonder. But, nonetheless, I will still wear it. It is just too much fun! Thanks for the advice.

And that's the bottom line. There is an interesting effect that you'll probably notice, though. The more you wear it, the more confident you become; and the less hassle you'll encounter about it. I can still get caught short by an idiotic remark, don't get me wrong.

However many comments or questions that seem offensive are simply a result result of the observer's being surprised by your kilt. We are a bit out of the ordinary most places (like central South Carolina). Sometimes with the best of intentions, someone will not be able to come up with the word "kilt." If so, I hope I don't decapitate them for using the other word.
