As to Jamie's hat, well-----------------------.
Well... I grow lemons, and I could see how one would not want to look like one... Especially the Volkamer lemons I grow; they're very, very ugly.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Now then Ted, you are a very important chap! Where would we gin drinkers be without lemons?

Gin already makes me make the face like I just sucked on a lemon. I don't need to add an actual lemon to the mix. I might implode. You fine sophisticated gents can keep your Gin (more for you anyways).

So... about that rubber sporran. Turpin, could you manage that for me? I prefer the feet to still be on.

There are only three sets of rules I ALWAYS abide- the rules of marriage, the rules covering my safety at work and the rules regarding my turn to buy a round. Beyond that, I think most rules are open to interpretation. That being said, I agree with previous posters in that any decision made should be an informed decision.

...so is it OK for me to wear my Iron Maiden hockey jersey with my Black Stewart kilt? I hope not- it feels all the more deviant if you all say no.

I don't know, but it's been my observation that the people who ask for reactions to their ensembles are not the ones who act all resentful when the commentary goes contrary. There's usually some sort of pile-on by defenders, and so it goes.
I'd be willing to bet that part of what's behind the defensiveness that builds up among those who would flaunt "the rules" is that they understand there ARE conventions, but don't understand the reason for them or else don't see the place for them where they are in their station, and thus, not wishing to appear out of place in someone else's world, they work hard to claim territory in their own world.
Here in Cyberspace, our worlds appear to drift into each other's more often than they would in real life, I think, but it is only an illusion.
A long time ago, I thought that XMTS had committed to putting up with each other, (the "Don'ts" thread notwithstanding) owing to so many other common interests.

Good thread. I totally agree with Jamie. Dress how you want, but at least know where it came from. It's kind of similar to wearing a certain tartan, in that sense.
