I absolutely concur with this advice. A new Balmoral always (usually; never say "never" or "always") looks pretty . . . what's the word? . . . pressed.
You really should give it a good washing and working and dry it outside before you wear it. It needs to be somewhat floppy and soft, and that crease from the shelf needs to disappear.
At least that;s one man's opinion. And I speak form experience. I've done this will all my bonnets and berets. ith:

Welcome, from Inverness-shire. As a balmoral wearing(60 plus years)Highland Scot, all I can say is that we wear the ribbons tied up and as we are civilians, the non ironed, non military, non starched look is how we do it. In fact the more "beaten up" they look the better!

Thanks to dbh and the scot for Balmoral bonnet advice. I have been considering getting a balmoral but not so sure about the look&fit of such an obvious piece of headgear. Has anyone tried a British army style berret as a substitute? (gives a nod towards your nationality and previous service). The berret could be worn with a clan badge or relevant millitary capbadge. Get ahead, get a hat!, Tom.

The balmoral is an "obvious piece of headgear," which makes it the perfect choice to wear with the kilt. Why substitute? I've worn a balmoral for decades with the kilt (and without).

Kind regards,

The balmoral is civilian attire,I was delighted to leave my berret with my uniform, in a trunk, when the army and I parted company. The berret is fine, with a uniform, but looks all wrong with the kilt.If you click onto threads that I(JS) have posted and look at "wedding in France" you will get an idea how a balmoral should be worn.
