Now then! How could I forget THE sporran? I could do the kilt wearing world a service-------just think, maybe a medal, a new kilt, new roof, definitely a case of scotch-----this needs serious thought! Now where is it you live?

I have absolutely no disagreement with you here. We can all agree or disagree on any issue - but this should be done respectfully.

My apologies...I don't want to hijack this thread but I just have to ask:
And I want to ask this as respectfully as I possibly can (frankly, it is just a matter of curiousity more than anything else)...
But your profile says that you are posting from "the Highlands, Scotland," and yet you say "this is the USA...."

Instead of set rules to regulate what men where with their kilts, we should just set out guidelines on how to look nice and respectable in a kilt.

I believe this was meant as a rhetorical statement, i.e., what one of the "enquirers" -- presumably based in the nonconformist USofA -- might say in dimissing the sage advice of a Kilted Elder (or "Kilted Ghillie", as the case may be), such as Jock Scot.

I love this thread! Especially Jaime's excellent hat. I too have a hat that I dearly love, but doubt seriously if I could wear it with my kilt. This hat has been a constant companion for 3 winters now and will probably be the reason I do not go kilted every day lol. It is very similar to this one at Cabelas.com except mine is an oatmeal color and does not have the leather strap. The small ear flaps are wonderful and fold up when not needed.
I pick up my kilt the 7th and will be wearing the hat until then. My poor bald head and I will be very sad not to don it again, but such is life.
Edit: I found my hat Cabelas had it hidden on their site! http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...378&hasJS=true

This reminds me of my liturgy professor that frequently cited Baumstark's Law, a liturgical principle, that the oldest traditions are to be found in the most solemn occasions. Put another way, traditions of solemn occasions are the slowest to change. For example, think of graduation ceremonies with academic regalia, rooted in centuries old traditions.
It fits with Panache's comment about formal fashions.

I too am a fan of the Deerstalker hat, and will one day replace the one I used to have.
I followed MacMillan of Rathdown's comments and suggestions to the letter when constructing my daywear outfit. The jacket and waistcoat wern't the traditional tweed, rather brown corduroy. Jock Scot said it looked great.
I think this falls into the spirit of the tradition rather than the rules of the traditional.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Huzzah.
To ask for advice, receive it and then tell the one giving advice THAT WAS ASKED FOR that what they've said is bunk and they're going to do XYZ anyway...
...is rude, arrogant and so totally and utterly STUPID that I'd be inclined to put the person on "ignore" from that point out.
Mind, this i s not what Panache did. Panache asked for advice, listened to it, thanked Jock for it, and then decided to do something different. I rather doubt that he told Jock that his ideas were bunk.
Carry on, Jock.

...so is it OK for me to wear my Iron Maiden hockey jersey with my Black Stewart kilt? I hope not- it feels all the more deviant if you all say no.
