Phil -- not everyone in America is like that, though. I cringe whenever I read such stereotypes of Americans, because quite frankly, I resent that I am represented by such folks.

Todd, I sometimes get carried away with myself but it is more down to frustration and certainly not condescension. I admire everything that America has achieved and many of my ancestors emigrated there so I have a vested interest too! The frustration comes from ignoring the traditions I was brought up with but I understand too that other societies have to evolve their own traditions in their own ways. Whether I agree is another matter and on that we may agree to disagree!

My point though was that not everyone in America ignores tradition. Many of us admire the customs and traditions of Scotland (and the rest of the UK, for that matter) and strive to keep them out of respect to the land from which they came.

So, how many rules do I break when I wear my UK Workman's slung low with a T-Shirt and a pair of Chuck Taylors? Seriously, though, I agree. I enjoy reading the posts by our traditionalists, and enjoy learning the "rules". Maybe it's knowing the rules that makes breaking them more fun!?!?

ROFL...I have to say I find this greatly amusing, because I have been known to wear my lightweight black kilt out to the bars and such with a pair of Chuck taylors, athletic socks pushed down, and a t-shirt on many an occasion...Oddly, the fact that I was wearing Chucks WITH a kilt got more comments than the fact I was wearing the kilt!

To ask for advice, receive it and then tell the one giving advice THAT WAS ASKED FOR that what they've said is bunk and they're going to do XYZ anyway...

...is rude, arrogant and so totally and utterly STUPID that I'd be inclined to put the person on "ignore" from that point out.

I don't know, but it's been my observation that the people who ask for reactions to their ensembles are not the ones who act all resentful when the commentary goes contrary. There's usually some sort of pile-on by defenders, and so it goes.

I'd be willing to bet that part of what's behind the defensiveness that builds up among those who would flaunt "the rules" is that they understand there ARE conventions, but don't understand the reason for them or else don't see the place for them where they are in their station, and thus, not wishing to appear out of place in someone else's world, they work hard to claim territory in their own world.

Here in Cyberspace, our worlds appear to drift into each other's more often than they would in real life, I think, but it is only an illusion.

A long time ago, I thought that XMTS had committed to putting up with each other, (the "Don'ts" thread notwithstanding) owing to so many other common interests.

Perhaps I am wrong Rex,I hope not, but I think that some of this thread has been a clearing of the air and like most families perhaps it needs to happen every now and then, for the greater good. For my part, I have said my piece and maybe I have made a few think and that is precisely what I intended. Nevertheless on the "rules,convention front" the conversations have been courteous and civil as they should be. From my point of view, no harm has been done and none has been intended by anyone throughout.
