Can you help me with Scottish accent?

As Jock Scot, JSFMACLJR and others have pointed out, there is no such thing as a standard Scottish accent. Some parts of the Highlands and Islands speak better English than the English as it is, to them, a second language and many Scots are educated south of the border. The south and the north-east have problems understanding each other and nobody understands Glaswegians! My own accent is Glaswegian, tempered by Dumfries, modified by Ayrshire and turned on its head by 22 years in the British Army!

Chas, I spend 6 months of the year in and around Aberdeen and I assure you their diction and pronunciation is 100% pure Aberdonian and the accent certainly can't be mistaken for 'no accent at all'. Up the coast a bit in Pe'erheeed n Frayzerrbrrr (Peterhead and Fraserburgh) I understand about 1 word in 3 !! (and I'm used to hearing and understanding a variety of British accents!!).

Good choice with the Glasgow accent - it is steriotypical Scottish and is recognised the world over. Where as, in Aberdeen they speak with no accent at all. Their diction and pronounciation is 100% pure. It is said that their English is better than most Englishmen's. Funny old world.

i'll agree with Daz here. where did you visit?

aberdeen has a very strong accent, i've family from that area so i'm ok understanding them, but on some nights out there, some of my mates could hardly understand some of the ladies ;)

I don't want to hijack this thread back to its original topic, but the best source of (foreign) accent is an acting school/coach.

Most reputable scholars of theater can help one to pick apart an accent, and built a workable vernacular/accent that works well for the part.

I am from Aberdeen and I'll tell ye that from Stonehaven to Peterheid, ye cannae understand a thing we say. Weegie is much easier to understand that Doric. Ye sure you were in the 'Deen?
