Does anyone have any history on or know a great website that lists the contributions of the Scottish to Oregon? Such as towns named for Scots, or Scots who made significant changes or left a mark upon the state?

I have been tapped to give a wee talk on Oregon at our Burns night on Saturday as the committee thinks we should tie Oregon's 150th birthday to Burns 250th. Our town is named after Rabbie hjimself and is celebrating the 125th anniversary of it spost office named for him by George McGowan and so someone else is doing a talk on that.

But I am wanting to show other Scottish connections. Any help is appreciated.

Well, I spent a lot of time on McCullough (?) Blvd when I lived in Portland 40 years ago.

Imagine a few Scots were with Hudson's Bay Company.

Happy hunting. I'm still trying to figure out where to obtain the new Oregon State University tartan....if its ever actually been woven yet.

Don't forget the importance of Douglas Fir to the state:

The common name honours David Douglas, the Scottish botanist who first introduced the tree into cultivation in 1826. Douglas is known for introducing many North American native conifers to Europe.

If I remember correctly there's a town in Oregon called Glencoe...complete with a monument to the Glencoe massacre in Scotland...and every year a number of gather in kilts in Glencoe, Oregon and commemorate the event.

Aye...it's named afer Burns. I live there...lol (actually in Hines..which is literally right next to Burns). We are having the Mayor of Burns speak upon the post office named after Rabbie. And it was named by George McGowan after his favorite poet.

If I was you, I'd be less worried about this than trying to make sure a University of Oregon tartan is never ever designed, let alone woven.

Can you imagine that fluorescent yellow in a tartan? It'd make Macleod look conservative.

and the Oregon State District tartan is #5743:



the local Scottish Country Dancers have adopted this tartan as their "official" tartan. I've seen it worn...the "khaki" predominates.
