Flat Caps. No no and thrice no! Suitable hats when wearing your kilt. Discuss

I guess I just don't understand. What is it that makes a Russian fur hat, canadian fur hat, cowboy hat, smokie bear/ranger hat OK with a kilt, yet a tweed flat cap not? In my eyes, ALL those options are much more discordant. The only folks you'll see wearing a smokie bear type hat (if it's what I'm thinking of...)

Girl not withstanding, a Ushanka would look perfectly silly with a kilt. My tweed flat caps are at least irish in origin/manufactur and to my eyes look alot more appropriate than many of the other suggestions given. I'm really missing why they are viewed as such a fshion "don't" by some.

I don't think Jock or Courtmount were suggesting that any of those would go better with a kilt than a flatcap. They were saying that if the weather conditions called for it, then function was more important than fashion.

I still think that the flat cap works fine. In fact, I've seen it with me own eyes!

I think that we might be confused about where a flat cap could/would be worn with a kilt. I would wear a flat cap with a kilt to:

A parade on St Patrick's day, or any other day
The pub
Running errands
To work (I only wish!)
Etc, etc, "day wear" situations

I would NOT wear the flat cap with a kilt to:

Burn's supper
A funeral
A wedding
Church/Mass
A formal dinner
Someone's house if they were one of the people that posted on this thread that they really dislike the flat cap with the kilt.

Well, I might wear it then, just to push buttons!

First the important stuff: What bike are you riding? I have a 2003 Triumph Bonneville with a big bore conversion to 900cc (50 cubic inches). The wife has an 883 Sportster Low. I'm hoping to fly them over to Sturgis some time in the future - if the Pound / Dollar exchange thing ever becomes more favourable and my bank account more healthy.

Second, I'm not sure why the flat cap is so wrong and the others acceptable so I'm speculating again. Maybe its because the flatcap looks as if the wearer is trying to conform to the accepted standards and is making a mistake. Whereas the other hats I mentioned are obviously not conventional Scottish dress and it is therefore obvious that the wearer is wearing them for practical reasons or other reasons and has taken a deliberate decision.

Just so that that there is no confusion, for me, I cannot conceive of any event or any occasion day or evening when I would even consider wearing a flat cap with the kilt. I am simply amazed that your cap wearing countrymen cannot see how awful they look with the kilt. Enough said, I think it is time for me to bow out of this thread.

My friend, always remember. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To you they look awful, to a lot of others they look fine. Just the way of the world. My advice, just don't look when you see them coming.
