MoM,
I include all walking sticks and hiking staffs in this poll.

I'd like to have a nice cromach, I really like the look of them. However when out hiking or backpacking I'm as likely to pick up a fine looking sturdy stick along the trail and leave it when exiting the woods as anything.

Yes when at the games I'm apt to use my Crommach as below, also as often as the weather permits this is how I dress at the games as well.

As you can see by how drenched my cohorts are the Balmoral does come in handy from time to time

I myself have been favoring this simple one with a brass mushroom head as of late

IMHO, there are 2 reasons to "carry a Stick"
1. Fashion ( see McMurdoc & Jamie )
2 PRACTICAL (why I CARRY)
a. TERRAIN ( see RiverKilt)
b .Defense

I don't have much need for a walking stick/cane even with my gimpy knee. When out for some serious hiking though, I always use hiking/trekking poles. They are lighter, fold up into your pack and out of the way, AND they pick up cigarette butts off of the trail better than your stix.

Well summed up!
What other object looks and feels so good in the hand?
What other accessory helps you up and down steep inclines and assists you in making certain that the next step will take your weight ?
What other bit of kit can brush a bit of rubbish aside with a flick of the wrist or be raised to defend against man or beast?
All this and at the same time give us comfort and support as we travel on through life.
A good walking stick is a very good thing indeed.
Cheers

Apart from when I am in town, I am rarely parted from my cromach when out and about. When I am salmon fishing and wading up to "the Plimsole Line" in fast water I use a wading stick to steady me. It is a thunb stick about 5 feet long with a serious amount of lead on the bottom to keep the tip in contact with the river bottom.
