			Where to buy material?

My lovely sister has plowed her way through Barb's book and Barb's/Matt's supplement on how to make a box pleated kilt and says she's ready to give it a shot. Now I need material.
 Two questions:

 1) Tweed or tartan for a box pleat?

 2) Where can I find suitable wool/wool blend that is reasonably priced? Frankly, I don't want to mortgage the farm until she gets some experience. I love her, but even she's said, "Who knows how this first one's going to turn out?"

I picked up my first material from walmart and ebay, duck canvas cloth for $2.50 a yard on sale. Now, not going to go to a fancy dress party wearing the kilts I've made with it, but it's good training till I got the PV, and soon Wool.

This is a good source for tartan, although he has nothing for sale right now: http://stores.ebay.com/CLANTARTANPLA...sxQ3asstQQtZkm
I have also bought wool saffron of eBay and forum members regularly post information in the For Sale or DIY sections.

Try the fraser and kirkbright site as they regularly dump remnants of various types of fabrics, some for as little as 6$ CDN per dowuble width meter. They should be great to at least start out with. Sometimes you get lucky and they are selling quality wool tartan at a good discount, as those who succeeded in getting either the Maple Leaf or Ulster 16 oz wool from them a couple weeks ago can attest. Their website I believe is

Just remember that, if you're making a box pleat kilt, the heavier the tartan the better. 16 oz is ideal, 14 oz is minimal. Anything lighter, and you won't be happy with a box pleat kilt.

eBay seller "trendyfabrics1" is also showing some Harris tweed pieces at reasonable prices (~$10/yd double width) right now. Thanks, I think*, to Kevin Kinney for this heads-up in another thread.
 * I know it was Kevin. The caveat being that I am now awaiting delivery of yet another piece of fabric. . .
