For how much you need, twice as much as double width. These days most kilts are made with double width which can be cut and sewed end to end to make the full length. If a kilt is 9 yards you need 9 yards of single width as opposed to 4.5 yards of double width.

Here is the gen on the Royal Air Force tartan. Having served in World War11 with the "boys & girls" in blue, I decided to design this tartan, as a tribute to all those who served & are still serving in this particular arm of the British Forces. There is no restriction on who can wear it, as sons & daughters of those who have served in the R.A.F. are entitled to wear it, as are any persons who respect the efforts of the Royal Air Force. I hold the copyright, and the cloth can only be supplied by me or my franchised company.

And, the current consensus is to pleat to the white stripe.

My RAF tartan kilt arrived from Strathmore Woollen Co. today and its very good quality, and well made. It arrived within the promised three to four week timescale, and came complete with matching flashes. Its a 13oz, unlike Ron(Riverkilt)'s which will be a 16oz, so it will be interesting to compare. My kilt fits very well and I've been busy this morning removing the basting stitches and attaching a kilt pin. Now I have nine kilts. I'm planning to wear it tomorrow when I'll be on duty at the shop/cash desk/cafe at the aviation museum at Carlisle Airport (my final duty of this season as we close till Easter after this weekend). Hope to get some photos tomorrow, which I will post tomorrow evening or Sunday.

Happy for you Cessna, that is so wonderful. You gotta feel great wearing that RAF kilt!

My RAF tartan cloth is at my kiltmaker's now. Posted this on the pics forum a few days back, but can't resisit another post here to show off the beautiful tartan.

They're making up more 160z, but this is the last of what they had on hand.

The kilt arrived in December 2006. It was beautifully hand sewn and I've worn it often in honor of my father's service with the RAF in 1942.

Very nice tartan, and I would agree -- have it pleated to stripe.

I seem to remember seeing a pair of cufflinks with the RAF aircraft roundel somewhere that would go great with that tartan and formal wear!

They would be Ben Sherman cufflinks. My wife bought me a pair by him with a raise rampant lion all pewter type finnish on a rectangle and had them monogramed
