    Bear tartan pleating options

Here's the pleating options I have for the Bear tartan that I recently acquired.

I'm decided on the pleating but I wanted to share the options that I chose from.

    Pleat to Sett:

    Pleat to stripe 1: (busy)

    Pleat to stripe 2: (clean)

Ugh, it's a feeling that I always have to go through....
    Do you feel it too?

Now that I have the thread count for the Bear tartan, I think I would go with sett, but I don't quite understand how that works out on a box pleat... It's a lot to think about.

Which stripe is the clean one pleated to?

    Good luck, Mein.

Clean one's got a bit of that lawn-chair look, but if the "rumpus room" isn't too big. . . did you go with sett?

Looks like you have a double width of tartan? Remember that this is an asymmetric tartan - you can't rip it in half and rotate it a the center back like you can a symmetric tartan. You'll need to allow for a hem.

If it were my kilt, I think I would prefer to the sett. The reversal of the stripes is confusing, though.

    Thanks for posting your progress,
    Rex.

Put me down for the sett as well. Best of luck and keep us informed as you work on this beauty - ok?

I prefer the sett as well. When will you tell us which you chose?

I'm set on the sett as my pleating option. Yay - the audience lifeline chose it as well.

Oops, sorry about the asymmetry being part of the test pleating. That pleating is only fleeting. I did the testing nearer the raw edge (for practical reasons). And the fabric is only single-width - the mill generously gave extra width. Had they doubled the width, the asymmetry would have started there around that point.

Thanks for the responses. I will be hard at work on it tonight!

Thanks Barb, esp. for pages 17-18

Ted, to me it's easier to pleat to sett in a box pleat than in a knife pleat. So, say start your first box pleat to your first stripe -
fold along nicely to form the box pleat so that there are no gaps between edges (not always, but in this case there are no gaps) until you hit the next major stripe (at this point it's one and a half setts away from the first stripe).

It's easier done that said. (, that's the first time I used that expression in reverse).
You should give it a try if you have tartan remnants or perhaps a tartan scarf or blanket.

I personally like mine pleated to the sett, but if you're going to pleat it to the stripe, I'd go with option 2.
