I say wear the badge on your Balmoral thats what the rosette is for. I think it adds quite a dash to it. I'm sure my Balmoral would not look as good without my X-Marks Badge.

I was going to ask a question about wearing something there other than a clan badge if one is not part of a recognized Scottish clan... But I think you answer the question here, McMurdo. Thank you.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Per Sara's request I split off the posts regarding the MacArthur clan badge to its own thread in the Tartans and Heraldry forum.
The thread can be found here

Ted, the Xmarks cap badge would be just the ticket, if you do not wish to wear a clan badge.Whilst I don't think wearing a badge in your bonnet is a must, your bonnet WILL look so much better with one.

Thanks, Jock. I have no problem with wearing something that looks a bit like a clan badge; just making sure.

To echo Jock's comments, there are a few "generic" badges in the clan badge style that are offered by purveyors like Gaelic themes -- I know for example, that they have a clan badge with a "Jimmy"* in the center -- St. Andrew and his cross -- that would certainly work for someone without a particular clan badge. They also offer a Lion Rampant and a Thistle badge.
*The nickname for the Black Watch's sporran badge.

How about the rosette? Has anyone here taken off the black rosette that comes from the factory on most Balmorals and replaced it with on made of the crest and/or tartan colors? The Thompson book says to do it, but I don't remember seeing one, maybe because I haven't looked.

That would be the livery colours of the clan chief; I have done it with the cockade on my black balmoral in yellow and blue.

Just an afterthought: Thompson makes this as a suggestion for those who do not wish to wear a black cockade, which is viewed by some as displaying allegiance to the "Hanoverians", or a white cockade, which has Jacobite symbolism.
