I can't recall seeing anyone kilted at the races in Ayr or Musselburgh, so don't think I'd go kilted to the races in Kentucky. Race meets are one of those occasions that seems to have their own dress code, and I'd follow that.

A couple of years ago when we first went to the Bluegrass Stakes, our seats were right behind the "owner" boxes and there were two people there kilted. One was dressed pretty much as McMurdo, the other had what I would call an estate tweed like the Scottish Tartan Museum sells. I do not know which horses were theirs and wish now that I would have asked.

I've never worn the kilt to the races, either at Churchill Downs here in Louisville, or at Keeneland in Lexington. I usually wear a tweed suit to Keeneland, as it generally is a bit cooler, and lighter weight suits to Churchill Downs at the Spring Meet, and tweed suits at the Fall Meet. And my trilby. That would be more appropriate dress, but if you choose to wear the kilt, McMurdo is on the right track.
