As the guys have said, if you cut a square of symmetrical tartan (which this is) and center it on the dark blue block, it should look exactly the same when you rotate it 90 degrees.
Having said that, on two occasions, I have received a piece of tartan where the warp-wise and weft-wise stripes of one of the colors was not the same. The weaver had apparently warped the loom with one dye lot and run out somewhere in the weaving process and not been able to finish the weaving with exactly the same color for one of the stripes.
Finlay - where the two green stripes cross in the center of the dark blue block, does the green block look like a solid color green, or, when you look closely, can you see two different colors of green crossing one another in the weave? If the former, then it's an optical illusion that one is darker than the other. If the latter, then the mill used one green to weave the warp and a slightly different shade to weave the weft.
But, regardless of this, you'll lay the kilt out parallel to the warp (the long length of the fabric).

Thanks for the replies,
Barb, I don't see two colors of green, one looks green one looks more blue than green. But I do believe now it must be the illusion one darker than the other.
Since I don't have my book yet, I'm not real sure what is what. Or what the hey I'm doing. But I have been experimenting with the pleating. I've done box and knife pleating. I like both. I also pleated the box pleat to where the dark blue and light blue are in the same pleat.
On the knife pleat I have about 9 light blues and then 2 dark blues. So far it kinda breaks up the the solid looking long line. Which I like. But I am just looking at it laying on the table. I haven't check it out to see what it looks like in the distance.
So I'm just waiting on the mail man to deliver the "BOOK"

I assume that you're the one from Texas who just ordered a book? If so, it's on its way.
