No, I didn't. See my post above. The picture in question is in a book in my library. The picture I posted illustrates that ToS's were worn with khaki shorts in North Africa.

it is I who should apologise; the photo I referenced is from a book in my library, not the photo on the 51st Highland Division's web site.

The book in question is Army Commandos 1940-1945 by Mike Chappell, part of Osprey Publishing's Elite Series. I'll see if I can scan the photo and post it.

The toorie should stay, its one of the things that makes a balmoral a balmoral and not anything else. I really can not understand what the problem is. Why in heavens name wear the kilt at all, why not stick to wearing trousers, if people are so sensitive, and the little old toorie is hardly an issue in comparison. Well, is it?

I like the toorie on a balmoral.

You probably have the same problem that I had. You pinned the badge level with the rosette on your balmoral but when you looked at it in the mirror it looked crooked. That's because it is. Pin the badge on so that it's a little up on the left and a little down on the right. Then when you put the balmoral on, line up the ribbons in back with the center of the back of your head. The badge and rosette should sit just over your left-hand eye. If the badge still doesn't look right, adjust the pin again. If that doesn't work, it's not your balmoral, it's your head!

I generally wear an "Ireland" cap badge with my black balmoral for Scottish events and the same or a harp pin on my caubeen (a rifle green balmoral minus the toorie and with the ribbons tied up) for Irish events. They both look better with the badge. I have a green hackle for my caubeen and it was difficult to figure out how it was supposed to be attached behind the rosette. It doesn't look that good in my photos from a past St Pat's parade which is about the only time I wear it. Get a second opinion from someone you know before you go with the hackle or the feathers, but go with the badge.

Cap badge... A few years back, someone gave me a coin-like token with an angel on each side. It's gold-ish colored and 1 and 3/8 inches (3.5 cm) across. I put it in a wire bracket, so that it can be worn as a pin.

I wonder if that would be usable as a cap badge?

A couple of weeks ago I informed my delightful young wife that I intended to start wearing my Balmoral when I/we go places. "Golly wears his all the time," I informed her.
Her response: "You're not Golly."
