    Box-pleated kilt progress

Hello. I'd like to share some photos of the progress of the first heavyweight wool box-pleated kilt that I'm making. I've mostly worked in light to medium weight box-pleats. I used the TAoK and TAoK supplement (box-pleat) as reference (thanks Barb and Matt) for this project.

I originally planned to machine-stitch the pleats but I decided that hand-sewing it would be faster (!).

    Marking the front apron:

Marking the pleats and taper. A goes to B, C to D,

Pin A to B: I prefer to use quilting pins. They're bent so it's much easier to use.

    Pin one side and sew:

"Unboxed" pleats on the inside of the kilt:

Pleated to the sett, now sewn down:

    More progress-pictures to come...

Sounds great so far. I love using quilting pins too; not that I'm making kilts...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Uh-oh! I noticed 8 pleats in the last picture and confirmed it on the kilt. And I only need 7. Ugh I need to rip that last two stitched rows now...

    Progress pics:

The lining on the front apron. I scored a deal when I found ~8 yds of this pinstripe fabric on sale (with a 40% off on top of that) for $21 at G Street Fabrics (a local/regional store)!

I'm proud of the waistband. I used the the correct colored stripe to align.
Notice that the underapron (almost) aligns correctly - a coincidence ...

My hand and fingers are aching...

That is coming along really well meinfs! You have quite a talent and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the project.

I find that for an achy hand, a glass of Duvel or something similar soothes the beast, so to speak.
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

You guys have me itching (sorry) to tackle another tartan kilt. I may try machine-sewing a knife pleat from the Joanne's PV. . . we'll see. Right now my "real" job has heated up, less time for kilting! But I did just finish a black denim FlamingoKilt for Bob, to debut this weekend at the Queen Mary Games.

BTW why pay for bent pins when the cheap ones get that way for free?
