    Post chiefs and clans

By wearing the clansman's badge you are declaring "fealty" to your chief. I know some people are uncomfortable about this idea, but remember the whole purpose of the clansman's badge is to denote a clansman (or woman) that is part of the chief's family. The badge belongs to the chief, not the surname.

Some will indeed write up a bond of manrent to their Chief -- is it necessary? Not especially, unless you're serving in the Atholl Highlanders, I suppose. But, it's a quaint custom that some enjoy.

For the chiefless clans, the Lyon Court may appoint a Commander to act in the Chief's stead until a new Chief can be named.

Our own Sketraw has a very interesting article on his web site which is germane to this discussion:

Heck, I was going to say round up a bunch of henchmen and declare yourself the new chief.

But before you go around with eagle feathers in your bonnet, you better have some paperwork from someone official, or a permit from the Fish and Wildlife Service, or you may find yourself Chief of Cell Block 27!

Funny you say that. I've read in two different places that Clan Macduff has narrowed their search for our rightful chief down to two people.

One is a gent in Scotland who is about 186 years old. The other is a guy in Indiana who could not possibly care less about all this stuff.

Needless to say, my resume is updated, and I'm tanned, rested and ready. I'm just waiting for a phone call.
