Usually when confronted with the skirt comments, I usually just comment about how terribly comfortable it is and move on. As the type of people who feel the need to make such comments are usually very uncomfortable in their own skins, demonstrating that I am not only comfortable in my own skin, but also my own clothes usually stuns them long enough for you to move the conversation along.
The only time such comments have left me speechless was when a group of painters started wolf-whistling at me and asking where my heels were. I had honestly never encountered a group of guys so secure as to make a joke of their own sexual preferences I honestly didn't know what to do.

Some people just aren't worth arguing with.

I was once asked by a very aggressive drunk fellow, "What's in your little ball sack?" (He was referring to the sporran.) "More than what's in yours!" was my comeback. His buddies thought that was quite hilarious.

I like this thread idea a lot. I haven't really had any issues with this sort of thing yet, but I realize I too am rather unarmed in such an event.
Perhaps there should be a post here in this thread that is updated with all or the best quotes and ideas given by us X-Markers.

 Keep it up!

The questions I've never had a problem with...you can pretty much tell from the question, the asker, and the tone how to respond.
The belittling comments took me a while to figure out a response. Now I just look them in the eyes and listen and wait until they're done. A few seconds after they've finished I look confusedly at them and ask, "That's it? That's all you've got?" Then I can just walk away shaking my head. They won't have said anything you haven't already heard before.

"That's it? Gee you could have said..." and here you repeat all the actual funny comments that could be said of a man wearing a kilt.

You get everyone around the person to laugh with you and the person who tried to get a rise out you looks very, very stupid.
