I have this weird idea of wearing a 8-9 yard Brise (family) with a Modern Lindsay Fly (Clan tartan). A PC, or Argyle, Black bow tie, I think the different tartans would complement each other and make a rather elegant look. After all I would be wearing both sept and clan tartans. Now Mixing in a cross Clan like Gordon or Mc Gregor, might be pushing it but Clan and Sept I would think would pass muster.ith:

If may utter a word of dissent here, it is not usual for two tartans of different clans to be worn together. I see full well that one tartan is a family tartan and a sept, but nevertheless it qualifies as a different tartan to the clan tartan that you are also thinking of wearing. No doubt that you will do as you please, but just in case you get "button holed" by some irate clansman, at least you will be prepared!

I personally really like the look. I have a modern Clergy kilt that I wear with tie and flashes made from ancient Clergy. I like the fact that they compliment each other well, and add a little bit of subtle variation. Also, I have kilts in the Colorado and Albannach tartans on order. I'm seriously thinking about getting a black shadow tartan long plaid to go with them. That would also look good with my saffron shadow tartan... Hmm... Now there's a thought!

That was my thinking as well, which is why I was thinking of going for a solid color. I know full well this is also not traditional, which is what I like about it- a look mostly my own that is still rooted in tradition.

Wasn't it "fashionable" in Victorian times to pile on as much and as many tartans as possible?

Like I said it was a weird idea, I was just musing as to the possibility of mixing Clan and Sept. Of course it would really depend on what the tartans looked like together.

An Ancient and modern, might or might not go together depending on the tones and actual weaving. As far as I have been able to research some of the Lindsay tartans might actually clash with each other. But then family's never have that kind of problem in reality!

I think you have misunderstood, perhaps not. Anyway let me say this. Here in Scotland we don't worry about all this matching up business, as long as the tartans belong to the SAME clan(that could be over a dozen in the case of clan MacLeod) then it really does not matter and is quite acceptable. So modern, ancient, muted,or,weathered is not an issue either ,as long as the tartans belong to the SAME clan. The no no is wearing two(more?)tartans of different clans. This seems a difficult thing for you tidy minded non Scots to grasp, but that is how it is.Hope this helps.

What is/was the convention on a husband and wife wearing two different colorways of the same tartan, such as I like the modern colors but my wife prefers the ancient? We both wear Lockhart, woven by Mr. Dalgliesh in Selkirk, and are planning to have some photos taken in our woollens some time in the not-too-distant future, which I will post for the rabble to peruse.
