Don't wear more than one tartan.

Jock a query. What is the opinion concerning non-clan tartans? Is it one tartan period? Or would bringing out a non-clan tartan, such as Isle of Sky, every now and then still raise a few eyebrows?

Mariner, you've opened a can of worms this time! Welcome aboard, by the way.

One thing that bothers me is people who wear a whole arsenal of weaponry to Highland Games. I understand the need for a knife in the sock. I don't see the need to own a claymore, much less tote it around for everyone to see. Or a "gret ganglin'" dirk, either, unless it's part of a uniform.

Something else: Balmorals that just came out of the package and are still stiff from being blocked. But we've covered that already.

One more thing: teenage boys wearing their kilts extra low, as if they were blue jeans in the current foolish-looking style. I'm glad they choose to go kilted, but somebody (Jock? Mac of Rath?) needs to pull them aside and 'splain a few things to them.

Having three sons of my own, now grown up(?), and one 14 year old step son I have learnt that it is a complete waste of effort trying to tell,sorry advise, them about anything! As to teenage step daughters --------------------!

Good question! Most Scots will only know one or two tartans,so they will assume your Isle of Skye tartan is some sort of clan tartan. I did! Most Scots have little idea of fashion, or, district tartans. So again, I would say that to avoid the "poser" label, stick to one tartan. Let's not get too wound up about all this ,it's not a hanging offence and no one is going to be chased out of town if you wear more than one tartan. If you are resident here and you wear more than one tartan,without good reason, then yes, thoughts will be had and even the odd eyebrow might be raised,but nothing will be said and the earth will carry on spinning, as it always has done.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this. Actually I haven't received my kilt yet. I'm having one made here in Savannah, GA. And I've been doing "research" on here for about a month and i have to admit anyone who wants to wear a kilt for the first time- I'm sending them here!! The amount of practical information is a huge help for someone like me that really doesn't know what he is doing. Hopefully by St.Pat's day I'll have it and will be doing you guys proud! Thank you for all the advice and comments!

Living in scotland i thought i might mentione how much of Jock Scot's list of donts that i have done


Don't wear a non tartan kilt. Tweed is not often seen and may still raise an eyebrow. done more than once in fact i am right now

Don't wear a flat cap,ball cap,John Deere type cap. Better to wear nothing on your head. once i didnt think it looked right

Don't wear feathers in your bonnet. this ones ok
Don't wear white hose. why not i like them?
Don't wear scrunched down hose. with boots
Don't wear trainers. last weekend
Don't wear more than one tartan. Cooper,Blackwatch,Makenzie

Ugh--I MUST be a ludite:

-I wear boots most of the time.
-When my garder knots loosen--my hose "scrunch" (I have softballs for calves)
-Worn properly--for me means any day that ends in "Y" (and only non-regimental is during the Games--for the sake of the women and children)
-Weapons???? Does a heavy hammer and caber count?
-Head gear? Ok there was that one time with a green plastic boller--at least I had one on in the pictures used as evidence.
-White hose? Only when the others are dirty.

Simple answer--to wear at kilt "correctly" do the exact opposite of me ;-)

Simplest answer: Do whatever Hammish does!
