XMarkers in Cincinnati or attending USITT

    Hi All,
I'm going to a conference in Cincinnati from March 16-21. I was wondering if there are any other XMarkers that will be attending the United States Institute for Theatre Technology Conference, or if there is a Cincinnati kilt night in that time frame. I'd love to meet some of the other rabble in person. I'm planning on taking my kilts. I hope Cincinnati is reasonably kilt friendly as I will be walking the 3 blocks from my hotel to the Duke Energy Center (the travel grants have been cut back, so this is a "no-frills" (like rental cars) trip)

    Cheers
    Chris

    Chris -

Cincinnati is kilt-friendly. I was just at the convention center in a kilt last night, in fact, to see the Home and Garden Show. (A woman selling tile pulled me aside as soon as I walked in to tell me that her ex husband, a Hamilton County Sheriff employee and piper, wears his kilt semi-regularly, and that she had never encountered another like him until she saw me. He may be a member here, I suspect.) I'm out and about in my kilt often enough that the only reaction I get any more is an occasional "Woot!" or some lesser benign comment.

I am not attending the conference, but I would be happy to meet you for dinner or drinks if our schedules allow. I am open Tuesday evening, Friday evening, and Saturday.

Also, if you'd like a run-down on any local establishments or things to see and do, feel free to PM me with your interests.

    Regards,
    Rex.

I can attest to the friendliness of Cincinnati. I spent a quarter there on sabbatical last year and wore a kilt most days. The XMarkers in Cincinnati and Dayton are splendid and I'm most grateful for the hospitality they showed Mrs. Kiltman and me.

    Enjoy Cincinnati, crboltz!

Expect the usual curious looks, nothing more.

Just feel lucky you're not here to see our Bengals or Reds.

Wish I could meet up, but I am totally scheduled every night that week. Possible to get together for a lunch somewhere though.

Thanks for all the encouraging words! Although the conference is going to keep me busy, I know USITT is very kilt friendly, and I'm thrilled that Cincinnati is too! I'll try to get pics! Of course work has been incredibly busy, and I don't know when I'll pack, at least the kilts are easy to pack in my suit bag.

    Cheers

Chris - It was fun meeting you for dinner the other night.

Just for the rabble, I guess we can report that we noticed a couple of kilts other than our own out on the town Tuesday, but I wanted to chime in here again to say I was pleasantly surprised to see today at lunchtime a fellow crossing Fountain Square in a black UK workman's.

I'm guessing that odds are he was taking a break from your conference. How's it been going?

    Regards,
    Rex.

I've been carrying my camera, but still haven't taken any pictures. One of the companies at the trade show has black UKs as part of their uniform (the company is ZFX and has the distinction of having flown Kathy Rigby in Peter Pan both on TV and on Stage). There were several other kilts (mostly contemporary) at the conference today. The funniest thing was the Cincinnati natives who asked me on my way out of the Convention center, what group was in town. I answered "Untied States Institute for Theatre Technology" They thanked me for the information, and as they walked on their way, one said to the other "I don't get what the kilts have to do with theatre"

I got some other great kilt comments this week from other conference attendees, other folks in my hotel, and locals. Cincinnati is a very kilt friendly town -- even if many of them call it a skirt or man skirt instead of kilt. (not to re-open the skirt vs kilt debate).

By the way it has been great being kilted everyday, I'm going to miss it when I have to go back into my scene shop (which means back to the pants)

    Cheers
    Chris
PS I must say that Rex is one of the finest of gentlemen who showed me an excellent time here in Cincinnati.

    Hey Chris -

I'd like to give you a little postscript on the USITT conference here in Cincinnati. Last night I went to the monthly artists gallery walk. Several of the artists commented to me (in my Auld Lang Syne kilt) about a most unusual crowd that had descended on Cincinnati the prior week, having observed an uptick in the number of kilts out and about downtown. I heard from more than one artist that this group was "so nice" and the attendees were buying art.

Y'all can come back any time.

    Best regards,
    Rex.
