I asked this question of my import broker and Canadian and US customs.
The general answer for those just visiting the US is this;
If you are visiting and have a return ticket a Seal Skin Sporran will probably be allowed.

Jock,
Before you go to too much trouble worrying about which sporran to bring, it might be wise to check with your clansmen regarding the formality level of the events you'll be attending. It may be that you won't need anything very formal; on the other hand, your clan might want to "do it up big", since you'll be there from all the way across the Loch Mor.
And, to get the sporran back from your son, tell him that unless it's returned by a certain date, you'll iron creases into all his blue jeans.

Jock,
I have several dress sporrans that I'd be happy to loan to you. I can ship to your destination address if you'll cover shipping there and back.
I have a sealskin sporran that I wear here in the US, but I wouldn't tempt fate by going through customs with it.
I agree with Piperdbh, though. American weddings that I've attended don't seem to follow the strict rules of etiquette (12noon is more formal, guests to weddings which occur after 6pm should wear tuxedos, etc.). I would contact the family of the bride and ask what they expect male guests to wear. You can then plan your highland attire so as to be the equivalent.
Cordially,
David

Good advice there. I do need to know how formal things are going to be. On the son front, there are two problems there, I don't think he owns a pair of jeans and if he does, I am not too sure how to operate an iron!

In that case Jock threaten to turn loose your less than adequate ironing skills upon either an article of clothing or exposed flesh Or you could appeal to their good nature.......

You should buy a new sporran even if you do get it back, Jock.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Jock,
With such a valuable collectible sealskin sporran I would not take any chances of it being confiscated and lost forever---just not worth it. I have a nice arctic fox mask sporran you are welcome to use if you need one over here temporarily. Just PM and we can arrange to get it to you and back.
If you happen to be in the Kentucky area PM and we will set up a kilt night for you or could provide overnight lodging if necessary.
By the way, I am not sure if you were aware of this or not but flat caps are mandatory wear here in certain states, particulalry when a kilt is worn. ;-) Might want to check local laws for where you are visiting or travelling through before you come.

My experience with both US and Canadian customs is they are really nice people and do their job as best they can. I would not make their job more difficult by taking a seal sporran to the US.
