Wool Kilts for Someone on a budget
A recent thread about saving you money to get a properly made, wool kilt has got me thinking. Because I have chosen a career that, at the beginning, does not pay as much as some others, price is a big issue when looking at a traditional wool kilt (however I don’t regret that choice for second). I am currently saving money in order to purchase a nice wool kilt. However, I could never spend 5-600 dollars on a kilt, especially with the current recession and a new member of the family on the way. What I would like is to get everyone’s ideas on lesser expensive wool kilts that look great. I know that might be hard to find. I would just like everyone to share what wool kilt they would recommend for someone on a budget. Let’s keep the limit at about 250-300 dollars. If you think that at that price you can’t find a decent one, let us know too. I would like all opinions and any pictures you may have as well.

I would say for a wool kilt at that price you may want to take a look at Burnett's and Struth they are having a Casual Kilt Sale 5 yards 16 oz Lochcarron wool at $199.99 Canadian. The only problem is that it is a limited range of tartans.

An honest question, particularly with the recession that we are going through. If it were me, I think I would wait that bit longer and save the pennies and go for the best. However, I await the replies with interest.Prices this side of the pond do not apply, really.

I brought up going with a traditional box pleated kilt in that thread. The fabric costs are a bit lower.
I'm still thinking it over, but in my traditional style interests, I kind of like the idea of a less heavy kilt that is still made of 16 Ounce wool and still traditional rather than casual.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Check out the For Sale forum here at XMarks. I've got four different all-wool, "8-yd" kilts for sale right now. If you're an uncommon size or desire a particular tartan then you might have less luck, but a good used kilt in a generic or district tartan could be a nice option until you have saved enough for your "dream kilt."
Cordially,
David

I would say either look for a second-hand 8 yard kilt (which can be had at the price you are looking at), or go for a lower yardage kilt.
My own box pleated kilts are a bit higher than your stated price range, though you might want to consider that I only require 50% up front, and the balance is not due until the kilt is ready to be made, which with my current queue would be some months down the road.
Also, I have some on my specials page right now for $300. These would be made-to-measure, just like my standard kilts, they are just from tartan I happen to have excess of on hand.
We have some second-hand 8 yard kilts at the Scottish Tartans Museum right now:

(just noticed, I need to update that page and add a couple....)
If you want to have your choice of tartan, take a look at the casual kilts, like McMurdo recommended at Burnetts & Struth. The STM also offers casual kilts, that begin at $340.
http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/kilts_casual.htm
Again, just a little more than your stated price range, but broken into two payments, it might be doable.
I have no problem recommending our casual kilts to someone on a budget, as they are made from the same high-quality Scottish wool tartans as our standard kilts are, same quality leather straps, etc. Only difference is that they have less material and are machine stitched. But using the same high quality cloth to make the kilt from really helps maintain the traditional look and feel of the kilt.

If you don't object to machine stiching, you can get an 8 yard 16oz kilt from Tartanweb in that price range.
Best regards,

Also Scotweb Kilt Store at the top of the page offers X-markers a nice discount.
The Stillwater Heavy Weight kilts can't be beat at the $120 price point.

Might I suggest http://www.mcrok.com.
I purchased my first wool kilt from them after a great review from a member here. A casual 5 Yard in 13 oz. tartan cost me around $225 U.S. They have a good selection of tartans, from the Lochcarron Braeriach range I believe. Quality and communication were excellent and shipping was around one month from order to my door.
You might also seriously look at a heavyweight from Stillwater as others have said or a kilt from Matt Newsome. I have seen photos of Matt's work and I want to buy a kilt from him in the near future.
