Ron, I do see you in the members list, so you're in there That was the way to join -- it just sounds like there must have been some issues (I was having a few yesterday, myself, with Facebook in general).
As far as a group over there (or two, actually), one was created before, but it wasn't an "official" group. It was still fun to join and it helped me find some of the members over on Facebook who might not have gone by the same name. Some of them wrote on the wall and said "Hey, I'm ___ at XMTS", so I was able to send a friend request (my settings are very private over there, so I'm hard to find).
The one you just joined is the "official" one.
I think the main difference between the "group" and "fan of" pages are that one is just a grouping of people... for example, if I wanted to form a D/FW Kilties group. The other is for fans of companies, bands, specific organizations, and in the case a webpage community.
It's just a great way to spread the word, as well as find each other in other social networking situations. We can chat over there (for example, on the wall, I see that someone has posted asking if anyone else is having issues getting on the board this morning) on the wall or I think I remembered seeing a discussion board as well.
I hope this helps some
