I do kind of like the idea of adding a black fedora with a red band, but was advised against it by a friend.
How about leaving off the tie?

Yes, leave the tie off, and wear the vest.

Trust us on this one, you should get and wear a sporran.

The vest idea is the best if you insist on not wearing a sporran; you'll need some pockets in which to place your stuff. Ask Riverkilt, he knows.

However, if dancing is your only concern about the sporran, just shift it to the side when you dance like many of us do. I try not to allow too much to come between me and a pretty girl when dancing.

Then again, you don't really want to be bludgeoning her with your "caber" now do you?

A sporran is good for keeping things in place, that's why I suggest one, and wear one, every time I wear a kilt.

About the sporran: I have been wearing kilts nearly full time for the past 2 years (give or take) and have never needed a sporran. I have other ways to carry stuff (in this case, I will probably be hauling supplies in a backpack, as I will be setting things up), I know how to avoid accidental exposure, and while I respect that many people see the sporran as being an essential part of wearing a kilt, I choose to go without.

Besides, I'm already spending more than I should, the last thing I need is to buy something else that will merely take up closet space.

    Anyway, thanks for the input.

I will consider leaving off the tie (As with most of the little details, I won't make up my mind until I actually see it in the mirror)

And I'm definitely thinking plain black will be best. My nightstalker kilt arrived yesterday, and the gray stripes are lighter than I expected. The irritating bit is that the tie is much darker, just like the pics I had seen others post. Apparently there is some variation among their kilts. So, now I think that trying to match a louder pattern would be very bad, while plain black will sort of tone it down a bit.

And while I still like the fedora, I'm just not willing to spend the time and money on something that unnecessary, particularly when it will probably be met with mixed reviews.

Balmoral would look nice, and they aren't too expensive.

The hard part is, I hate dressing up, so I'm trying to find something I can be comfortable with while still being stylish.
Wearing a kilt will serve you well for all of the reasons you have mentioned, especially impressing a beautiful woman. Women love a man in a kilt, it shows confidence.

As far as the dressing up part, try a nice polo or turtleneck or even a nice button up shirt. I don't know how you feel about jackets, but a nice tweed of some sort will give you some flair without being overly dressy.

So, I have the whole outfit together. I tried it on for a friend, and despite her opinion that I'd look better in pants, she approved. She was also kind enough to take a crappy cell phone picture.

This is my "I hate getting my picture taken but I'm going to try not to show it" look.

I tried it with and without the tie, and it just looks better with it.

I'm quite happy with it, or, at least as happy as I will ever be with something that isn't a t-shirt and sandals.

Looks aright to me... Seems like everything matches. It's hard to tell as it's a cellphone pic...

The only thing that I'm not sure about is the shininess of the vest... I suppose some might like that but the only way I like my vests in the least bit shiny is if they're made of leather. But that's just a personal taste, I imagine.

Its not actually that shiny, its just the lighting conditions. It does have a bit of a shine to it though, and while I would have preferred it didn't, I had limited time, money and selection, so I had to settle for this.
