Good answer, Ron. I get the sense that he was geniunely curious and you are a credit to the rabble with your sense of timing and poise.

Well thought out reply. It sounds as if the guy was genuinely curious, and you gave the proper answer for him. Nice looking tartan. BTW what is the messanger bag you are carrying?

The messenger bag is a Saddleback Leather briefcase, size XL. They also make messenger bags and even have a pouch with a pic of a guy wearing the pouch as a sporran in their photo gallery. www.saddlebackleather.com
Was my Holiday present to myself last year...cost more than a tank...but - I got the fever bad...resisted for many months...gave in to self-nurturing when the holiday season rolled around.
Here's a better pic of the briefcase...it also converts so you can carry it like a backpack - though I'm not sure why one would do that.

"Why" answer on first kilted outing
My very first occasion to wear the kilt in public other than highland events, this came up. My wife and I went to a movie in downtown Bethesda, Maryland (a suburb of DC). It was summer, and downtown has lots of sidewalk cafes and restaurants. Taking walk after the movie, I felt great, swaggering along in my Leatherneck tartan, with a beautiful woman on my arm. One of the hostesses on a sidewalk cafe called out, "I have to ask, Why the kilt?" I called back "Why not!?" Michele called out immediately after "And it turns me on!" I think my swagger became even more pronounced.

That's part of how I first wore a kilt out of the house, really.
