Good thing you said "probably wrong." Without that caveat you could've stirred a lot of feelings from some people with well trained dogs.

One of the Sheriff's in my pipe band has a K9 (black lab) who is trained in Gaelic.

I think it's a great idea, and I know you've got the land for Rudy to run, I'm sure you'll be able to train him in Gaelic, though I wonder about changing his name as the poor wee dog will have gone through quite a bit by the time he is in his new home.

I've heard that hand signals are an excellent way to train your dog as well.

I have had 3 different dogs(one red heeler/aussie shepherd mix, 2 border collies) and taught all 3 sign language as well as voice commands...my 3rd dog knew more signs than verbal commands...

TheKiltedWonder and Beloitpiper - thanks for the suggestions (especially the pronounciations - I should have remembered that in my original post).

Thescot - my last dog and my work dog were taught commands in English, but were well enough trained that they always listened to me first. I'm just hedging my bets a little. As for using any odd word, Mog learned "play dead" as "canary."

McMurdo - I don't even if he responds to his current name, so renaming is an option. I just think a name that sounds like "Rudy" would make the transition easier.

Well that's different then. I agree the name should be close.
