Looking down into the hollow we saw this interesting stone ring and puzzled as to what it could be. I thought at first it might be an old sheep fold but there is no visible entrance.

Driving back toward Moffat we stopped to take in this view.

Absolutely beautiful photographs. I can hardly wait to see the Borders for myself when I visit this summer, though I'll be a bit more east in Elliot and Armstrong country.
As for the ring - and this is only a thought - I was watching a travel program on Ireland last week and they showed a farmer taking down a portion of the stone wall to allow his sheep to get through and then he quickly built up the wall again. There was no actual gate in the wall. Perhaps, if the ring was used a stock enclosure, this is what was done.

That could be possible and there are sheep visible close to it. I found a reference to a Covenanter being buried in the hollow but found a picture of his monument so clearly it's nothing to do with him.

Great pictures Trefor. They have taken me back to my teenage years all those many many years ago. There are a lot more trees now than there used to be. If you look closely you will see an entrance to the circle at about 4 O' clock.
