Welcome from Eastern Washington State. When I started making sporrans I follow Charles Thompson's book So You're Going to Wear the Kilt. Very soon I started to be dissatisfied with the smallness and the design in his book and started to look at historical examples. It looks like sporrans have evolved from very practical bags to carry items in to very stylized pouches. If one is going to wear it only once or twice a year (say at Burns' Night or the Highland Games) then the stylized one works. I, however, wear it a great deal more and so started to design sporrans with the practical aspect foremost in my mind. Since I wear them I was able to get a first-hand idea of what works and is necessary and what is not. I'm still working on them but have come to see them as practical pouches.
