    Oh, Henry!

Well, this is distressing news about my favorite kilted icon, Prince Henry of Battenberg:

    PRINCE HENRY AND THE KILT.
    From the London Truth.
Prince Henry of Battenberg has been considerably out of favor with the Queen since his return from Darmstadt in consequence of his earnest request to be excused from wearing the kilt, in which he was compelled to array himself last Autumn. The Celtic garb certainly did not suit him, for he never appeared in it without exciting the derisive comments of all beholders. The Prince of Wales in full Highland costume reminds one of George IV, and Sir William Curtis, but Prince Albert Victor looks worse in it than Prince Henry, greatly resembling the typical cockney Highlander, who puts his kilt on hindmost in front and wears full-dress tartan and all the florid superfluities in the morning.

    Who knew he was embarrassed?

    "...florid superfluities..."
They just don't write like that anymore.

This is the part that flabbergasts me:

    Not exactly a rave review.

Someone please describe to me what a "Typical Cockney Highlander" looks like so I can understand what this artical is trying to say.

Aren't they talking about the version of "East Enders" set in Edinburgh?

I don't recall a conspicuous number of kilts being worn on this show whenever I saw it.

So "pleats in front" was a common mistake back in Victorian times? Scandalous
