Traveling with kilts

The airline security is just rediculous nowdays. A pen or pencil is just as lethal as the nail files that we can no longer carry onboard.

They should issue each passenger a knife as they get on the plane. The terrorists would have to outnumber the other passengers if they wanted to get anywhere... and in that case if they crashed the plane or anything, they'd be killing more of their own people.

Phil H - don't want to be pedantic, but to a Scot there is only ONE version of spelling the present participle of "travel" in Scottish (British) English, and that is: travelling (and I did make a point in my message that I was using Scottish English!)
The version with a single 'l' is American English.

I'm doing some homework regarding traveling over to the Tattoo this summer. I've read all the postings about traveling/packing a kilt and have found lots of good information, especially how to roll a kilt for packing. I have another idea I'd like to share. Using what is called a "SkyRoll". I came across one in a men's suit outlet.

In this series of pictures you can see how the roll works. The suit lays in the zippered garment bag. There is space for some shirts/ties/accessories in zippered pockets on the bag. Zip it up around the kit and attach the center roll. Then roll the bag up. I've used my wool Eisenhower jacket because it's about the heaviest coat I'd put in the roll.









There is space in the roll center, accessed from each end for shoes/socks/underwear and toilet articles

This "suit bag" is marketed as a carry on bag for airports because you can stuff it in the overhead easily. It's marketed at $100 in high end men's clothing stores, but I picked this one up from a chap in California on Craigs list for $25.

I will be on a trip this summer overseas and I have about 20 or so old rock and roll posters that I collect that came in shipping tubes, can I put the rolled kilts in them insted of stockins

On a 10 day trip to Scotland last summer I took 4 kilts and two argyll jackets and waistcoats on 4 scotweb kilt hangers and two jacket hangers using a samsonite 4-suit double ended heavy duty garment bag. Figured I would need the hangers to keep everything hung up when I was not wearing it so may as well travel with them on the hangers already. No muss, no fuss, no wrinkles for the duration of the trip. Plenty of room for ghillies, hose, a couple sporrans, hats and shirts, etc... Wouldn't change a thing if I did it again, except I would probably leave out the flat caps. ;)

A further question from me is, due to the increased awareness of airport security I recently packed all my kilt pins in my suitcase even the one from the kilt I was wearing. This was fine on the outward flight, and I did the same on the way home, when I unpacked all my kilt pins had gone. Are they confiscating them or have they just been knicked?

The latter. I have had security open my checked luggage after it's left my control, and they'll slip a letter in there indicating that your bag was opened and searched. If they actually removed something, I'm SURE they'd tell you. No letter = probable theft.
