Kilted Charity
Okay, So me and a couple friends were discussing kilting oppurtunities. I realized that going to a pub once a month is fine and fun. But what could I do that would be fun, meaningful, and fit with my lifestyle? And I thought about all the wonderful X-markers who are some of the most warmhearted, loving, decent folks I know. I know alot of you do charity work.
I have always felt the need to do good work. I always devote time every year to a cause, weather it be cleaning a local stream, giving toys to children, helping feed the hungry, or helping a local college team raise money for uniforms.
So why not do it kilted!
We have a few kilt themed organizations here, but they are either affiliated with the "elite," such as firefighters and policemen. Or they are affiliated with scottish heritage. So why not a group that is open to everyone? Men, women, children and the like?
So I am working on this idea and would like your help.
#1 I need help with the name. Here are a couple of ideas I have had.
Kilted 4-a Cause
Kilted for a kause.
Kilted 4-a cause STL (Saint Louis)
www.kilted4-acause.com
Any input would be great!
Eventualy once I decide on a name I will start a website dedicated to causes around locally to get involved in. Wouldn't it be neat to walk proudly in your kilt!
Me and my wife, and 1 friend have commited to a walk this fall in St. Charles for the American Diabetes Association! Once a name is decided an official team will be made! We will collect money and 100% will go to them, so there would be no "membership" fees to be part of "kilted 4-a cause." And everyone involved so far will walk in our kilts and bring some flare to the cause! I am looking into other walks as well.
I just need to save up some dough for some T-s! Here was some designs I had been working on. The qoute I recieved was 25.00 each.

Great idea. Seems like a bit much for the shirts, though. If you're paying $25 each, you'll have to sell them for a bit more to make the charity some money. I would do some shopping around to see if you can't get the shirts made cheaper.

Thats because I am only ordering 4 shirts off the bat. I only have 4 people commited. The more I order the cheaper they get.

Not to usurp your mission, but around the time of the discussion on how to improve XMTS, I had given some thought to a philanthropic arm for this community, associated perhaps with paid memberships to fund it. A board would need to be formed to agree on a mission and vision, choose beneficiaries, raise contributions, manage the funds, arrange for delivery of donations, and promote community outreach at appropriate opportunities. It seemed like a tall task, and I didn't know how the owner of the site would feel about such a suggestion, so I withdrew the thought. What I really don't know is whether or how a global community such as ours with a niche interest will find resonant causes to support.
So, there - I put it out there finally.

Rex.

Put it out there! When I brought it up to a coleague of mine, he said "Just what we need, another charity." I thought, wow I am talking to a man who is complaining there are too many charities? HA!! I just want to start something small and local, and bring some healthy attention to this particular ADA walk, they only had like 50 walkers last year so some press would be good. And some positive views on kilt wearers just like the biking enthusiasts!
I also don't want this to be affiliated as a "Scottish" heritage group. Just people who like to wear kilts, regardless of heritage, and people who want to step out and do some good here in STL! maybe even pull in some new kilties!
I am in a battle to give up my nicotine addiction, and in doing so the money I save will go towards this little dream of mine.

How about a Christmas type charity that helps out the Marines or another organization for Toys For Tots? You could call it Kilted 4 Klaus or Kilts 4 Claus....

A Cause for the Kilted.. This way you can evolve around the different causes you wish to support... It would be neat to start a group like the Hash House Harriers but find local charity events to support.. Make it a group effort to attend as many events as feasible, raising funds for them all.. ADA one week Breast Cancer the next and so on.. Make it a friendly compition to see what group raises the most kilted team members, and in turn, support the events and raise funds. Who knows maybe a tartan could be made to designate the groups one day in the future.. in the beginning, just being kilter will be enough..
my thought on this matter, your idea.. I like it, and it will catch the medias eye.

wow
I think a friendly competition would be great! Though I do not want to over commit myself yet. I figure a few events this year, like one a month, will suffice and test the waters.
I just missed march of the dimes. We have some other walks coming up soon but I need time to raise funds so I figured the ADA walk this october would give me time to get some Tees made up and raise some funds!

Charities
I would like to propose that the mods open a separate forum for members to speak of their charities and ask for the support of fellow X-markers. No one has to look at it unless they are interested so to my way of thinking, no harm is done. What say the rabble?
