Looking for an Xmarks Kilt

And Please Big Kahuna and Dan, and everyone else for that matter, The X Marks Tartan is NOT for some X Marks elite group. There are no elite groups here.

The X Marks Tartan is for every member of this forum. Each and every member has an opportunity to order fabric, to have a Kilt in the fabric and to take pride in what we have built here at X Marks.

It is your clan Tartan if you wish to think about it that way.

I never cared for stepping on toes. But I do feel a part of the XMark clan. Thank you. Maybe one day, 30 years from now, and I will be at a tartan festival and see a Tent that says "Clan XMarks" haha.

Or a swatch in the tartan muesam "Clan XMarks, 1997."

So when will there be more Xmark tartan selections? Perhaps a muted or hunting?

Maybe there should also be a Xmarks clan motto! What would that be? "Gentlemen of the WWW!" ?

Dan, I think what you are referring to was the Fringed SELVEDGE that arrived on the X Marks Poly/Rayon fabric.

The Selvedge is the two edges of fabric when it comes off the weaving loom. High Quality Kilt fabric has what is known as a "Kilt Selvedge". This means that the bottom of a Kilt does not have a rolled or folded up Hem. The fabric goes down to the bottom of the Kilt and then just magically ends.

Some looms produce what we call a "Fringed Selvedge" This is less desirable to some people. By mistake this years run of fabric came with a Fringed Selvedge. This meant that if you do not like to look of a fringe all along the bottom of your Kilt you will need to roll or fold up a hem in the fabric.

Here is an example of what I am trying to describe.

The X Marks on the left is from Run 4 in 16oz. Merino Wool. It has what is known as a rolled or tucked Selvedge. You can see where the ends of the Weft yarns are tucked back on themselves to create the Selvedge.

The X Marks on the right is from the 2008 run of Poly/Rayon. You can see the Fringe left on the Selvedge from the loom. You can also see little holes near the Selvedge edge. These are from small hooks that hold the fabric straight and tight during the finishing step.

The Leatherneck above has a true Kilt Selvedge. Each of the Weft yarns is a continuous length that goes back and forth on the loom until there is a color change.

1. There is at this moment, some yards of poly-viscose in Steve's shop, available for sale to the membership at a very attractive price. You can get a kilt-length right now. Edited to add: see the forum X Marks the Scot.com Propaganda for info on this fabric, and for future deals

2. If you want wool, our resident kilt makers can order it custom woven for you. The disadvantage is cost: you'd be getting single-width, so the affordable thing to do would be to get 4 yards for a box-pleat kilt, or perhaps 5 for a knife pleat. Those would also be very nice kilts, if made with 16-ounce wool.

3. Otherwise, all you have to do is stick around. Eventually another order will be put together. The advantage here is (surprise) cost! If enough fabric is ordered, double-width can usually be obtained for the same price as the single-width custom order.

I joined in 2007. The recent PV order was the first in which I had a chance to participate. I seem to recall the 16 ounce was already ordered when I joined, and delivered that summer.

Meanwhile, I've been able to participate in a special order of Carolina tartan from Dalgleish, a special run of MacNaughton from Fraser and Kirkbright. I've missed on some other interesting ones, generally due to cash flow rather than lack of enthusiasm. Some of our kilt makers (USAK and CCK) have taken subscriptions to get kilts made in specially ordered PV like the "new" Xmarks. USAK's MacGregor is such a tartan. USAK and CCK now are stocking Isle of Skye, which was originally a special order.

In sum, it pays to stick around and have a modest savings account so that we can answer opportunity's knock.

You can always get embroidered patches with the XMTS crest: Steve makes those to order. At some point there may also be new kilt pins, t-shirts, or a few other kilt-related items.

Great minds... I'll have to find a reference, but I believe there was consensus on a motto meaning "by choice, not by birth" which rather well describes this e-clan. Also, of course, there is a plant badge! :ootd:

Hey BigKahuna,

My recent burst of waistline has kilt extenders on my X Marks kilt - hand sewn by Kathy Lare. Have thought about offering it for sale and using the proceeds to buy a larger size on the next fabric run. Would have to measure it up though. Would guess the waist is in the 42" range. If you happen to be in that size range and are interested....

As was said, xmarks tartan and accessories are not for the 'elite' they're for everyone, even the lurkers.

I have 3 kilts, 1 SWK standard nightstalker, 1 wool Isle of Skye and 1 wool Newsome Box Pleat of the 16oz Xmarks. I'm mostly a lurker here, but i proudly wear the xmarks tartan, and the xmarks clan badge to st andrew's society functions and when people ask about the tartan or the badge, I direct them here.
