    Dad wants a Xkilt

    Hi all,
I am on my second xkilt and my dad saw it and called in his measurements for a xkilt for himself. Ok, I understand the taper from the fell to the waist, but my dad is the same measurement at the fell and the waist. Should I be concerned that the kilt will hang strangely or is this lucky and will make this kilt the easiest yet?

Few people are really straight up and down like that. More likely, he has what Barb T calls a "bay window" making his waist and hip measurements the same -- but there's more in front at the waist, and more in the rear at the hips.

I like to get measurements that I call "waist back" and "hip back" -- as if you were wearing a pair of p@nts and measured from side seam to side seam, across the back of the waistband and the back of the hips. That helps me figure out a person's proportions, and construct the kilt accordingly. Having the "back" measurements lets me taper the pleats in the rear while putting extra yardage into the apron to cover the front.

Hope that makes sense -- if not, maybe someone else will chime in!

Yup, I'd suggest putting some shaping at the back, and making the apron a bit wider to compensate. It's like using separate "splits" for the waist and hips/front and back in The Art of Kiltmaking.
