I tried that line on a twenty-something young woman, and she said, "No, I wouldn't be pissed." Then she unzipped her jeans to show me she was wearing a thong. I was gobsmacked.

Ron, am I reading wrong or is she asking you if you wear womens panties under your kilt? Please forgive me if I am wrong.

When I refuse to answer or give them obscure answers, one of two things happen: either they get the hint and drop it or they think it's a game and must know and willl not stop until they do!

I think women's need to ask the question comes from their primal need to control men.
Ya know, I was going to let this one pass, because I took it for being tongue-in-cheek, but since it's been quoted once and agreed to, I can't help myself by countering that I think that the statement is ill-informed and baldly misogynistic. Is it any wonder why we have trouble keeping women in our company here? It shouldn't be.

For the record - one only need read the legions of posts on the subject - women are not the only ones with a curiosity, but we do not accuse men of wanting to control men. Really, as someone else somewhere else said, they are all just boorish people who don't know what else to say. Let's leave stereotypes and mythical thinking out of it, if we could, please.

    Regards,
    Rex.

    Seconded!

btw, I think the amount of conversation about the subject among members is an indication that we can be nearly as obsessed about it as the non-kilted. For me, what's under my kilt is strictly between me and my wife.

Hey Peacekeeper83, that's what I thought at first too? Visions of her leading me kilted throught the lingerie section....that's why I clarified.

I think there's another aspect - just feeling ill at ease and not knowing what to say and that old line pops into their head and on out their mouth or keyboard.

Rex, you sir are classic. I love the line you add to your profile. Probaby gonna steal it - but leave off the not on the first date part...

I've only had the question once ("Me hose and me brogues"), and only a couple references to what's under the kilt otherwise. I don't think it has to do with "controlling" us in any way. Seeing a man in a kilt is an oddity, and people are curious. But not knowing what else to say, they fall back to what they're "supposed" to say. I guess it's just par for course. You see a man in a kilt, you ask the question. More rote response than anything, methinks. A game at best, social conditioning else.

There are others who expect regimental attire and anything else is unacceptable. Me at a party posing for a pic which would have been very immodest had I not been extremely careful with my apron. My friend "I hope you're wearing something under there..." with fear of my flashing her guests. Her friend "You'd better not be wearing anything under there!!!" If her hubby hadn't been there I think she would have KC'd me right then - she was downright indignant at the thought that someone kilted could possibly be wearing something.

Ya know that seems to the case with me as well. It's usually followed by the wife/girlfriend giving them a slap.
At least I can get some amusement from that.
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear
