    Welcome.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Any where near a theater and comunicating the scottish play's name is considered saying it in my book. As for saying it , I don't take a chance. And I agree if you are awake you are more thank likey working on something FOR the theater. You never do theater you ARE theater. So say the nuts I hang out with anyway. Though these are the same people who say I've been around too much contact cement because I actually LIKE doing costumes at their theater.

So would someone of that surname need to refer to their kilt being in "the Scottish tartan"?

If it's such a taboo, why do they print the name on the programmes inside the theatre?

Just silly questions. I dated someone in theatre, and she would always scorn me for saying the name out loud. But she didn't refer to it as "the Scottish play", but merely as "the play". She was in costuming, also.

Welcome from a fellow North Texan!

Well I had just crossed an outdoor courtyard, between the lobby and the costume shop, so I didn't type it, either.

And here I thought you had to spin around 3 times, spit over your left shoulder, say "Angels and ministers of grace defend us," go outside, run around the theater 3 times, say "MacBeth, MacBeth, MacBeth;" and er, umm, something. I always wondered, though, whether the spinning and circling should be widdershins...

And you know, that's right on the money. I just stay away from it as my "default" mode because I just as soon as I start trying to get frisky and say it on the rare occasion I'm not in the building, then I'm bound to it up the next time I'm in the building.

I brought this up to my staff and now they're arguing over whether it's a problem if you're in the building and someone calls you on your cell and says the name over the phone to you... is it their problem because they said it, or your problem because you're the one in the theatre?!
