Thanks everyone. As was pointed out by Rex, it is just a personal taste thing for me, and yes the gut has something to do with it, but I appreciate your comments.

My sense is that you guys in North America are a little more experimental than I am.

Nah, just think of it as more advanced.... Casual = comfortable, wear what you are comfortable in and to the level you are comfortable with.
