To me a "poser" kiltie is the person who ONLY wears the kilt to events where there are lots of kilties (safety in numbers), but would NEVER, EVER wear one otherwise. If you've worn the kilt out (in public) where no one else was kilted then you're a trend setter. So, Alan, in my book you're no poser.
Kilt on!!

Would you a poser when wearing an X-Kilt? Any of the ones you designed and you made.

I emailed my esteemed colleague Jock Scot just the other day with a question that revolved around ancestry and mothers and fathers lineage that basically amounted to, when I wear my clan tartan kilt, am I being a poser? I liked his response, and I'll try and paraphrase it.
If I were to visit Fort William and wear my clan kilt every day for a week, the locals would take little notice that I was wearing a kilt, let alone what clan it was. Furthermore (and I think I have this right), only fellow clansmen would recognize the tartan. No one else would.
If I were to visit Fort William and wear two different tartans, alternative every other day or maybe every two days, it might get noticed, and a few local hardcores might ask me about it. If I have a reasonable explanation, it would probably slide.
But if I were to visit Fort William and wear a different tartan every day, then I'd be a major poser and maybe even the topic of derisive conversation at the local pubs.

I don't consider you a "poser" Alan. I am a relative newcomer to the kilting scene and with a last name like Werner would at first glance seem a long way from Scots heritage. I started wearing kilts because my lovely lady Sydnie wanted me to become involved with her bother-in-laws (and his wife-her sister) clan. I have enjoyed the hell out of it and have met some wonderful people, you included. Interestingly enough a recent genealogy search of my family tree (by onother of Sydnie's sisters who is a professional) finds distant relatives from Dumfries, Scotland. So was I a poser until I verified my heritage? No I never claimed to be anything other than I knew I was and now I know more. Your desire to go kilted violates no rules and you have ample reason to be allowed to do so. Your friend opined on a topic he wasn't qualified to speak of and he was wrong. All I can add my friend is "kilt on."

Oh Well ...
I've kind of held off on this but, well ... OK Alan you nudged me to say it.
I suppose by your friend's standards, I am a poser. Not in a kilt mind you, but when I go equestrian trail riding.
I wear my jeans, Wrangler brand, boot cut. Underneath them I wear a pair of cycling shorts and a load of BodyGlide. I hate chafing. I wear boots from Ariat. They aren't constructed like your traditional cowboy boots but more like performance hiking boots. They look like cowboy boots but they're far more comfortable and certainly will outlast any others.
I usually wear UnderArmor T-shirts underneath my contrasting yoke cowpoke shirts and I wear a proper equestrian helmet on my noggin for protection. I've been known to wear one of several garbage can lid-sized belt buckles on a heavily-tooled belt, too.
I've been in the saddle since about the age of 5, I've owned horses before and someday I hope to own another one. So, since I don't wear what you would expect one to wear when I go trail riding, am I a poser?
As a side note-the "Kilt Police" spotted me wearing my black shadow tartan wool SWK with a 'loud' camp shirt at a recent convention. The exchange was kind of like this:
KP-"What is that?"
Me-"It's a kilt."
KP-"It's not plaid!"
Me-"You mean tartan, don't you? It's a shadow tartan."
KP-"That's not a kilt. Besides, I can tell you're not from Scotland. No accent."
Me-"Now hold on just a min ..." (KP cuts me off cold)
KP-"If you're not born in Scotland, you can't wear a kilt. You're breaking the law by wearing that. End of discussion." (KP wanders off, leaving me with my jaw on the ground)
The next day, KP is wandering the convention with a lady on his arm. She points at the Heritage of Scotland tartan kilt I was wearing the next day and says, "Nice Kilt! I like the colors!" She turns to KP and says, "Hey honey! I think you would look great in a kilt!" I missed the last of the conversation as he lead her away from the area at warp 11.
(edit) KP was probably ticked off I was wearing a flat cap.(/edit)
Alan, you are NOT a poser!

No, no, no. Those are "kilt bullies," not "kilt police."

No no no - those are people who simply don't know how to mind their own business.

I would say that many bullies fall into that category, and they usually have some very misguided and twisted sense of the way things should be that is required to be shoved down everyone's throat. Probably so they can think everyone agrees with them, therefore, they are right.
Not all bullies are that way, but many seem to be.
Ah, I just don't understand the term "kilt police."

You know, I never really gave this matter any thought- at all. Primarily because I personally couldn't care less. Label me whatever you want- it's your issue. Not mine.
