How d'ya tie traditional garter ties?

Puffer, with all due respect, he wasn't asking about the woven garter ties. His question was directed to those who know how to tie traditional garter ties that are knitted and crocheted. If you tie a knitted or crocheted garter tie like a neck tie the bulge is going to be way to big and over long periods of time potentially uncomfortable.

Duchess, I have to respectively disagree with you.

I just contacted a good friend of mine, who makes her living providing expensive crocheted items. She took a 1" crocheted "ribbon" ( slightly less than 1/16" thick max) & tied it in a 1/2 Windsor. The "knot was less than 1/4" thick . This is less than one of Matt's ties Again it is how you "position the "knot" ( If positioned correctly, the total thickness is only 2x the thickness of the garter.) That IMHO, is NOT to "BIG" ( under a "standard Hose or "Better".

As to "knitted", that should also be the case.

As to comfort, I wear GARTERS OFTEN with Period clothing ( Pantaloons), ( Woven, Very tight woven Inkle, Knitted, Silk & Leather.) for Hours, even days, moving through VERY active events. I tie them ( TIGHTLY ) in Sq. knots,Full Windsors, Bows etc. & I NEVER have a comfort Problem.( Garters are Garters, whether "Kilt Hose or "knee high)
Also, I wear a tie & the "knot" around my neck is either a 1/2 or full Windsor.

My advise to the poster, is TRY IT & see what HE thinks.

Using an acrylic/wool blend, with actually knitted garter ties, tying it like a tie does NOT work. Here is an image of the garter ties that I knit.



As you can see, the knot is huge and very thick. I can take more pictures of it if you wish that are better. I just finished this set this afternoon and had them with me at the kilt night. So lighting was unfortunately not ideal.

Now perhaps your friend doesn't use the material that I'm using. There is obviously yarn that is designed for example to make lace. I prefer to standard worsted weight yarn because it would have been more what the common person would have had to work with. Ultimately, with standard basic yarn, it's not comfortably possible to tie them like you suggest. I emphasize comfort because fashion should not be miserable.

You are more than correct that it is up to the original poster on trying the different ways. He may be using a different yarn than I do making them thinner and making what you suggest a viable option.
