Running with a Kilt
I am going to be buying my first kilt soon. I am specifically looking to get one to run road races in. I am looking at Sportkilts Original in either Army or Law Enforcement tartan.
Should I have the pleats sewn down?
Any suggestions for a newbie?
I was also wondering whether or not wearing a sporan would be advised?

I've ran some half marathons kilted.
A lightweight kilt such as the sportkilt would be preferable for this type of activity.
No need for basting stitches to hold the pleats together while running, on the contrary sewing down the pleats would restrict your freedom to run.
If you really need a sporran to carry personal effects you will need to keep it to the side, running with a sporran on the front can be VERY uncomfortable.

Hi Veganrunner,
Welcome to XMarks from Norfolk, England. Good luck with the running.

With the Sportkilt having them sew-down the creases on the pleats helps the kilt keep it's shape better, even in the washing machine.

If you mean having a kilt where the top few inches of the pleats are sown down and the rest are loose - which is the norm - then yes definitely. But if you mean using basting stitches around the hem to keep them together - then no, equally definitely.
Do a Google image search on "highland games" and you'll find that virtually no athletes wearing the kilt will wear a sporran whilst competing. That's the difference between fashion and function - someone who is totally at ease with the kilt will wear what is necessary (and as they have nothing to carry then a sporran would simply be there for fashion).
If you normally carry loads of things with you when running (orienteering, marathon or trails, perhaps) then what do you normally carry things in? A bum bag (fanny pack?) would work perfectly well with a kilt, as would a runner's backpack.
Enjoy the forum and the kilt!
Cheers,
Graham.

Brilliant! I'd never have thought of that one. Great stuff - have many been made and sold?
Cheers,
Graham.

Sportkilt gives you the option of having the edges of the creases sewn-down to hold their shape. It's not a basting stitch to hold the creases together.

Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.
