I heard that these events are horribly boring ...

Boring doesn't begin to cover it. It's bad enough to sit through one on TV where you can get up and distract yourself from time to time, but being captive at the actual event sounds like torture. Even worse: Being surrounded by people who are excited about the results and feel that the whole thing is somehow important.

I wonder whether this is a let's-be-honest-and-call-it-a 'beauty' pageant or some sort of 'scholarship' competition, as they like to call them nowadays?
