    Glasgow Highland Games - Kentucky

May 30-31 Barren River State Resort Park. http://www.glasgowhighlandgames.com/

Anybody going? I'll be there in a tent for Clan Barclay. This is the first year I've hosted a tent there. But I have been there the last two years working with the Highland Rim Scottish Society. Seven Nations will be the big entertainment draw. The Chief of Clan Kennedy is the Chief of the games, and the Family of Bruce is the honored clan.
If you are within a few hours drive of Glasgow, KY this is not to be missed. It's a well put together, medium sized event.

    see ya there!

Unfortunately I will be out of town and have to miss this exciting sounding event, one I would like to attend as a kilted new Kentuckian. Fortunately, I will instead be enjoying real french cuisine in the heart of Paris, France, (unkilted) in lieu of Guinness and meat pies (kilted) in Kentucky.

    Perhaps next year. Y'all enjoy.

I would love to attend but I'm on the wrong side of the pond. I visited Kentucky in 2002 and stayed in the Mammoth Caves Park. Which is quite close to Glasgow. Fantastic place if you are in that area go.

One small (no actually huge) problem with the place is that its in a dry county. 'Conspiracy 'tween the preachers 'n the moonshiners' I was informed by an old boy running a ferry.

I do hope Glasgow is not dry - or your games will be sadly lacking.

I love America, I love the go ahead attitude, the American way, the American dream, home of the free, get what you work for; but dry counties, in some things you are still... well backwards.

I wish that I could come. I plan on coming, someday. My grandfather was from Scottsville, his sister lived in Glasgow and I have cousins that still live there-I spent many summer visiting and have cherished memories of 'Aunt Nel'

The county that produces Jack Daniels whiskey is a dry county. They are not allowed to sell their own product in the gift shop.

I'm really not sure of the "dry" status of Glasgow, KY. But I doubt that will stop those determined to bring a wee flask of their favorite. I'm actually glad alcohol is not sold at these games. There are vendors that sell cheap swords and other pointy things. When alcohol and cheap, sharp, pointy things mix, someone usually shouts "Hey y'all, watch this...." and then the ambulance arrives a bit later.

I've been to Lynchberg. If you are in that neck of the woods its also worth a visit. They serve a very fine home made lemonade.

There's a long road from the I whatever to the distillery. We got stuck behind a real old banger being driven by an old boy in baseball cap, T-shirt and dungarees. Full gun rack on the back. He had a bumper sticker which read "COON HUNTERS FOR CHRIST".

I've seen 'Southern Comfort' - 'Now, if I was you all, I'd quit askin' questions and haul ***... 'cause my buddies... dey not nice like me.

I'll be there working the Pipe & Drum competition on Saturday (I'm one of the co-directors). I won't be in kilt that day until the Louisville Pipe Band Grade 5 unit competes, then I'll probably get out of it ASAP so as not to appear too biased.

I'm also probably going to the Tartan Ball that evening. Haven't made up my mind yet. THAT's when I'll be in my personal kilt, PC, etc.

I'll also be around on Sunday, piping with the Louisville Pipe Band as 'color' for the day.

Barren County (the seat of which is Glasgow) is dry. Also, since the Games is actually held at Barren River State Park, about 20 minutes outside Glasgow, it is also dry (technically, all state/national parks in Kentucky are dry).

This does not mean adult beverages cannot be found, they just can't be overt. (e.g., don't bring your bottles of Bud - no glass on site, and use a can cozy for your Coors.) Some establishments may also allow you to bring your own adult beverages to dine with - call ahead or ask a local to find out for sure. I'm not sure, but they may have passed a 'damp' ordinance in the last couple of years (i.e. some restaurants can serve adult beverages by the glass as long as their alcohol sales is not more than 45% of their total sales, or some such). That's something else to check on. Still, no package liquor sales in the county. You have to go to Bowling Green (about 1 hour away) for that.

A town called Glasgae that's dry - sacrilege.
