    Clark Tartan Variations?

Can anyone point me towards pics of any variations of the Clark tartan? I can only seem to find the one. I'm wondering if I can find any other variations out there, such as a weathered or hunting or some such. Perhaps even a different tartan that's a Clark associated with a specific location maybe?

    Thanks for any help.

You may have already thought of this, have you tried all the Tartan finders associated with our Kilt vendors? Just a thought! Most all family/Clans have variations such as you mentioned, hunting, modern, ancient, etc.

Here is a link to the variations >>> http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/qRe...chString=clark

Don't forget that Clark is not a clan, but a family name, which is a sept of Cameron, MacPherson, and others. You can also check those tartans.

Thanks a lot for that Link. I hadn't hit that finder yet. The only tartan I'd been able to find is the first one linked on that page. I like the variations it has. Now to just scrimp up the money, and it'll probably have to be a custom weave, as I've never seen any of the others offered before.

    Thanks again,

There are, as with other tartans, the usual options of Modern, Ancient and Weathered. This is also the only tartan designed for a profession, namely, the clergy. You will see pics posted here of several of us who wear it with this connection.

Frugal Corner does a VERY bright modern, while Sportkilt does the Ancient.

Please remember that the words "Ancient", "Weathered", "Modern" and "old" are alll the same Tartan. It is the weavers way of offering the same Tartan in different color variations that some customers may prefer and the weaver can sell more fabric.

Any time I wish to research a Tartan my first stop is always The Scottish Tartans Authority.

    http://www.tartansauthority.com/web/site/home/home.asp

This site was until the introduction of the Register the world wide authority on Tartans. There you will be able to look through all the registered Tartans for a given name, see the actual thread count, and see a computer generated picture of what the Tartan looks like.
The STA does not list "Weathered" or "Ancient" versions if it is the same Tartan.

As the "Official" Scottish Register of Tartans comes on-line and is fleshed out it will become the single source for researching Tartan.

So remember, A Tartan is defined by so many yarns of one color, followed by so many yarns of the next color and so on. This is known as the thread count.

Versions of a Tartan are just that, versions. The same Tartan offered in different colors or shades of different colors.

I'm not Xmarks savvy enough to search for it, but Matt posted a link to another one with a different STA number that was completely different than the blue/black/white one. We have talked about this before a time or two.

I don't fancy the chance of being confused with Clergy, so don't wear it myself. Maybe someday...

Don't worry, it's the clergy who co-opted the Clark tartan. LOL Fortunately, it works either way for me.

USAK also carries a Clark tartan in the blue/black/white version. Sport Kilt lists theirs as Clergy, but it really is the Clark tartan. They really ought to list it as Clark/Clergy, they might sell more.

Short of a tank, there are several economical sources of Clark tartan kilts. Even for a tank, the blue/black/white version seems to be a stock, not custom weave, tartan. A few years ago, our son bought me a wool Clark tartan scarf, off the shelf in a Celtic store.

Just for information, here are all the Clark and Clergy Tartans as listed on The Scottish Tartans Authority site.

This first is listed as ITI #1221. It is named Clergy dated to pre 1880 and is what is currently available from Lochcarron.

This is ITI #7640, named Clergy(two spirit) and was designed by Matt Newsome in 2007 as a private Tartan.

This next is listed as ITI # 39 and named Clergy(Smith)

this is ITI #4094 and named Clark(red). Available from Lochcarron

ITI #633, named Clark(Clan). This is what you get from Marton Mills.

Here is the Clergy Grey, ITI #1312

I'm glad to know about all the variations. I currently wear my only kit, a USA Kilts Casual, in the Clark tartan(blue/black/white). That's why I was asking about variations, the one I have from USAK is the only one I've ever seen. I've seen tartans and swatches and ties, all in the same tartan. perhaps a slight variation in the shade of blue, but nothing with dramatically different colors. Say for example, he same weave and thread count, but replacing the blue/black/white with maybe tan/lovat green/dark red like you might see in a hunting version of a tartan. I didn't realize we had totally different tartans with different weave/thread counts associated with the name.

Also, from what was posted, it looks like some of the variations might even be available, which, while still expensive, would seem less expensive than a custom run.

Maybe all of us Clark(e)s ought to get together sometime....
