New Tartan - City of New Bern 300
New Bern, NC celebrates its 300th anniversary next year (2010). Originally settled by Palatines, Scots were not far behind and played a major role in establishing the town which became the capital of North Carolina until the Revolution. Among others was the grandfather of Jack Daniels!
New Bern is named after Berne, Switzerland and shares the same coat of arms. The tartan takes the red, yellow and black from the City Arms and adds blue and white from the Saltire to recognize the Scots influence.
The tartan was adopted as a district tartan by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City on April 28, 2009 and will be the tartan of the City of New Bern Fire Department Pipes and Drums which is currently forming. It is registered with the new Scottish Register of Tartans.

It's cool that they're going to use it for their pipers. A lot of organizations seem to adopt a tartan and do nothing to follow up.

Very nice! My brother is stationed at Cherry Point and maybe this could be an excuse for him to be kilted.

Tell him to PM or email me. We have a very active Scottish Hertitage Society in new Bern and are always looking for new, younger blood.

He's on TDY right now, but when he gets back I'll try and get him interested.
I've been trying to get him into a Leatherneck or a MARPAT.

Looks very good. It's also good that it will actually be used.

It's a very nice tartan. I have an ancestor, Francis Fontaine, who lived in New Bern from 1743 to 1769, and is said to have worked on the building of Tryon Palace. I have never been there, but would like to go.

New Bern is a great town. "Blue Velvet", among other films, was filmed there.

It's good to see them get their own tartan... I spent some time in New Bern, back when I was stationed at Lejuene.
