modified brogues

Has anyone here ever managed to get a regular pair of brogues modified into ghillie brogues. I have a pair of black doc martin brogues which I love, and wear with a kilt on most occasions. I am playing this summer with a pipe band that wears white hose (ughhh!) and ghillies. My old band wore very dark green hose so I was able to just through some ghillie laces in them and I was good. But I don`t think I can pull that off with white hose. I`d hate to go out and buy a pair of ghillies mainly cus I find them very uncomfy! Anyone had any successes

I wear straight brogues. Maybe take a sharpie and draw the laces on the white hose.

There was a vendor in, IIRC, New Zealand offering that service -- it came up in a thread a few months ago. There's also an XMarker in the U.S. hand-making shoes who might be willing to tackle the conversion for you. Consensus in the "conversion" thread was that the conversion would probably cost as much as a new pair, but if that's what it takes to keep the dogs happy. . . !

I'll see if I can come up with that thread or perhaps somebody else will be quicker with it.

As well as adding the laces, I wonder if it might be feasible to remove the tongue and use some sort of white dye/paint to (neatly) paint in the illusion of spaces between the lace-holes.

Actually, on reflection, that sounds like the sort of great idea that ends with a ruined pair of shoes...

I understand why you want to convert your Doc's.. like Riverkilt mentioned in another post... I have big,wide feet and I cannot just buy shoes without trying them on first.. what one calls wide, may not be wide enough... I wish you luck on your search... and if you can find some Ghillies that fit at an affordable price...good deal... I hope you are able to get what you need... be it a reasonable conversion, or a new pair..
