What a bunch of self-loathing, unscrupulous, depressing, whining, and otherwise uninteresting bunch of low-lifes the rest of the world must be. Actually this topic of "trust" makes me think of a story I should have shared a long time ago. There is a weaver in NC, (Matt Newsome Knows her name I'm sure,) that my wife and I met at the Stone Mountain Games. My wife wanted a throw-blanket in the Carolina tartan. She did not have any on hand but had one back at her home. She took down our name and address and sent it to us without any payment in advance. She didn't know us from Adam's house cat but I guess being at the Highland Games, she figured we must be trustworthy. So maybe it goes beyond XMTS, maybe there's something about people who wear kilts, (or are married to people who wear them,) that is innately trustworthy. I'd like to think so.......

I also run with the traditional archery crowd, and I must say that the same sort of rapport and trust exists there as well. Vendors at trad archery events regularly walk away and leave their stock untended. It's not unusual for someone with a bow to sell to simply hand it to a total stranger to take to the practice range, and never think twice about it coming back. Campsites are never disturbed, vehicles are never locked. We offer advice to help each other become better shooters even though we may be competing against one another.

I think there is a common thread here. We in the traditional archery world definitely have a "them and us" mentality. Modern compound bows (and to some extent the people who are fans of them) don't really interest us.
This creates instant community, and from that sense of community grows trust.

I submit that a similar mentality is running through this community. We are a group of persons who are dedicated to something that is beyond the norm, something with history and tradition, something that defies time, fashion, and technology. We are proud proponents of the longbows of the clothing world, gladly loosing our cedar shafts in a world awash in carbon fiber arrows and telescopic sights.

Like all good communities it takes hard work and courage to keep it going! Hannibal is always at the gate and we must all continue to work hard to keep Xmarks the community it is. Lets keep it up!

Work shared by many hands is light indeed, the willingness of heart to share and grow simply because it is the right thing, creates so much better a world than the one of isolation and conformity. Indeed, let us share water and grow closer!

Ooh, ooh, can I be the crazy Uncle mentioned in the thread above? You know the one. The one that will sit at the Christmas dinner table with all the other Aunts and Uncles and Grandma present that gets all the kids to pull his finger.

This topic, of what we here have built, has come up before. We have asked ourselves if we are a "Clan", a family, a rabble. And you know what? I never get tired of it.

I am so proud of what we have made here. There are other forums, other sites, that have the Kilt in common. Some are based on other ideals, some on location, some on different aspects of this world we call Kilts. But none have seemed, to me, to develop this sense of trust, of honor, that has become the hallmark of X Marks.

It is in part due to the set of ideals, rules if you want, that we all agree to abide by.
It is in part due to the group of people we call "The Mod Squad". Who, with an even, and at times firm, hand they have reminded us to keep true to those ideals.
It is in part due to each and every member who makes the decision to stay here and stay true to those ideals.

No, we are not a Scottish Clan. And I would never attempt to claim we are. Oh yea, we have our own Tartan. We have our own badge and symbol. But those are just ways we have to identify ourselves. They are an excuse to have another Kilt or another Kilt Pin, or another Kilt accessory.
But when I put on my X Marks Tartan Kilt I am part of something. Something I am proud of.
So maybe we are upholding the ideal of "Clan". Maybe we are forging a new concept of "Clan". I don't know. It will be people a lot smarter than me to decide.

All I know is that this is my "Family". The place I come to share, to learn, to give, to be welcomed. Even when I am acting like that crazy Uncle.

I'm afraid that the message about archers being nice too made me laugh - I just had this cartoon with think bubbles of someone considering stealing an item from a gathering of people who spend their hobby time firing cloth yards of pointyness at soft targets in order to achieve greater accuracy over many yards distance.

Would anyone with an ounce of sanity want to risk it?

I think not.
