Got a coat to modify-need advice

I'm still looking for a tailcoat to modify, but in the meantime we got a goodwill blazer that doesn't appear to ever have been worn (the vent was still tacked shut).

Not sure what length to cut it to.

    Here's some pictures…

I hemmed mine to about an inch above the bottom of the fell on my kilt. In other words, I put on my kilt; put on the jacket; marked where the fell is in relation to the bottom of the jacket; then marked the hem one inch higher than that.

I folded the jacket along the hem line and pinned it to get an idea if that was where i wanted it. I cut the jacket a couple of inches below that hem line, so that there would be fabric to turn up, and it wasn't just a raw edge. Hope that makes sense.

You might also try putting some darts into the back to shape it -- so it tapers in down to the waist, then back out again over the upper hips. Pin them in, try to get them even on each side, chalk along the pin lines, baste in place and try on again, then sew. If it already has rear side seams (not just underarm and center back seams) you can take it in there, along the same taper. Kilt jackets look better when they hug the body -- most American sport coats are cut to hang more loosely.
